Discipleship Group – Tuesdays, 8PM
Worship at 7:30 in the church, followed by refreshments and study downstairs or on Zoom.
December
We are joining the Diocese of Toronto’s Bishop’s Advent Retreat on Tuesdays December 2, 9, and 16 from 7:30 to 8:30. As it is taking place on the Diocesan Zoom, it is not available in our Zoom Room. You can join us in person at the Church, refreshments at 7:15, or join from home by registering
directly with the Diocese at Registration and information.
We will resume our regular Discipleship and Spirituality Group on January 6, with an Epiphany Service and Study.
What is a disciple? A follower or student of a specific teacher, philosophy, or religious figure who not only learns but also applies the teachings to their lives.
As followers or students of Jesus, we spend our lives learning what it means to follow him. Discipleship is a combination of coming to know Jesus whom we follow and learning from Jesus, including how to apply it to our everyday lives. We do this in many ways: by reading and reflecting on scripture as God’s word; by reading books, listening to podcasts and accessing other resources that continue to expand our knowing and understanding; and by engaging with other followers, learning from and challenging each other. We are all disciples in the making, and we never stop learning and growing in our faith and in how we live that out in the real world.
I call our Tuesday night group, “Discipleship Group” because it is place where we are learning together and learning from one another. I believe strongly in a conversational style rather than a lecture because I am not “the expert in the room” but the guide who brings out the wisdom in the room. I may have some formal education, but I continue to learn and be challenged by the conversations. Some have been part of study groups for years, but there are always “aha” moments, new learnings. While others may not have been part of a formal group but their experience, their perspective and questions bring others a new perspective. One of my greatest joys is seeing those “aha” moments, seeing pieces click together, whether people have been disciples most of their lives,
or have come back after a time or are new to faith.Rev Dana
